But she longs for another child. When nature fails her, Jane and her husband take the decision to adopt. Three year-old Jody arrives at the household, nervous and withdrawn, but the family also find themselves exposed to a new world of uncertainty. How do you care for someone who has been abandoned by the people who should have loved her most? Or uncover love in the dark reaches of neglect? And is Jane in danger of forgetting her own family in her desire to repair this damaged child? Dave Hill has written a deeply moving, perceptive, sometimes funny novel about the bitter-sweetness of childhood, growing up and the family ties that make us who we are.Book DescriptionA small child, a large family - a deeply perceptive and moving novel about adoptionFrom the AuthorThis, my fourth novel, is a little different from theprevious three, Dad's Life, Man Alive and Single Men. The basic ingredientsare much the same: it's a story of contemporary family life with severallively child characters and parents doing their best in complicatedcircumstances. However, there's less outright comedy and bit moremelancholy than before, which seems fitting for the story. As its title more than suggests it tells the tale of an adoption, but it might be more fully described as exploring what happens to every member of a family when it is joined by a newcomer about whom very little is known. The adopted child is a three-year old called Jody who has been neglected by her alcoholic lone mum. The family she joins - Jane, Darren and their children Lorna, Eliot and Clyde - is a warm and loving one, but like all families it has its tensions. These change both in character and intensity as a consequence of Jody's arrival. The story traces and examines these changes and the ways that everyone tries to adjust not only to Jody but also to each other and, in the grown-ups' cases, to certain aspects of their pasts. I know from speaking to parents who have adopted and from reading the stories of others that the process of adopting can be exacting in this way. But please don't get the impression that The Adoption is a gloomy read. A review in The Times described it as \"full of agonisingly funny moments, when it seems as if Jane and Darren have bitten off more than they can chew. These setbacks serve to reinforce the realism of the story, so that by the end one is completely won over by the central characters and their endeavour.\" If you're thinking of buying a copy of the Adoption but can't make up your mind, you might find it helpful to visit the short extracts I have posted on my blog, Temperama (temperama.co.uk\/).
